Thanks to a huge performance from junior wide receiver Mitch Carsley, the Susquehanna football team snapped their twogame losing streak with a 30–24 overtime win at Dickinson on Saturday, Sept. 29.
Carsley had nine catches for 203 yards and three touchdowns on the day, one of which being a 22-yard touchdown catch in overtime to secure the win. It was also the first time a Susquehanna receiver went over 200 yards since 2013.
Freshman quarterback Michael Ruisch went 14-24 for 220 yards with two touchdowns and one interception on the day. Senior quarterback Nicholas Brotzman also threw a touchdown pass in the game.
Ruisch and Carsley started the scoring for the River Hawks on a 69-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 7–7 less than a minute after Dickinson scored on their opening drive of the contest.
Dickinson would respond three minutes later with a 25-yard field goal to retake the lead 10–7.
Both defenses would stifle the opposing side until Susquehanna was able to breakthrough with a 15-play, 71-yard drive that was capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by junior
running back Torey Brown. The River Hawks would go into halftime with a 14–10 lead.
Dickinson would respond on their first drive of the half with a 42-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Billy Burger to retake the lead 17–14 just three minutes into the half.
Carsley would continue his tear through the Dickinson secondary though with another 60plus yard receiving touchdown, this time on a 62-yard grab from Ruisch to retake the lead 21–17.
Red Devils sophomore running back Phillip Butler caused another lead change though at the end of the quarter with a 25-yard touchdown run to take a 24–21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Freshman kicker Elijah Hoffman would send the game into overtime on a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Susquehanna would then close out the game on Carsley’s third touchdown of the game. Brotzman would find Carsley on the right sideline, where he broke a tackle for a 22-yard touchdown pass.
With the win, Susquehanna improved to 3–2 on the season. The River Hawks will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 for their homecoming game against Moravian. Game time for the River Hawks is at 1 p.m.
