Susquehanna women’s soccer team pulled out a 2–1 come from-behind victory against PSU-Harrisburg on Saturday, Sept. 8 in Selinsgrove.
Susquehanna picked up their third win of the season thanks to an overtime goal from senior forward Kate Cantrell in the 97th minute.
Freshman forward Anna Werner also added a goal for the River Hawks. Senior forward Emily Sullivan and freshman defender Marley Clendenin each had an assist on the day.
Werner also led Susquehanna in shots on the day with six and tied Cantrell for the team lead in shots on goal with three each.
The River Hawks outshot the Lions 22–14 but PSU-Harrisburg put 13 of their 14 shots on goal while Susquehanna only put 12 on target.
Both teams went back-andforth but neither team found the back of the net in the first half and the game would remain scoreless going into the second half of play.
PSU-Harrisburg broke the scoreless tie though in the 62nd minute on a header from Mackenzie Haladay for her first goal of the season. Kaeleigh Smedley had the assist on the play for the Nittany Lions.
Cantrell would put a shot on goal a few minutes later but PSU-Harrisburg goalkeeper Kayla Arnold would save the attempted neutralizer.
Werner finally put the River Hawks on the scoreboard in the 80th minute on an assist from Sullivan to even the score 1–1.
Both teams were unable to score again in the second half sending the game into overtime.
Overtime would be shortlived though as Cantrell would score the game-winner just seven minutes after the period began.
With the victory, Susquehanna improved to 3–1–1 on the season while PSU-Harrisburg fell to 1–3–0.
The River Hawks were also able to take down King’s (PA.) 2–0 on Sept. 12 on the road.
Junior forward Julio Hutsko scored the first goal of the game for the River Hawks on a pass from Sullivan.
Cantrell would add the insurance goal on an assist from freshman defender Erin Wilson to bring the score to the eventual 2–0 final.
The women’s soccer team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to face Westminster College (PA.). The Titans are currently 4–1 on the season going into the contest.
