Students aid community in SU serve

Last Saturday, April 21, Susquehanna held its annual SU Serve hosted by the JCCE. The event was held at the end of Greek Week. Held in the afternoon, students on campus, both Greek and non-Greek members, faculty, and staff contributed service and help the community for a few hours.

Students get assigned to a location to do service in the local area. Each team has a leader and all teams meet at Weber Chapel to kick off the event and go to their assigned location. This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to serve, get together, and celebrate helping the local community. “SU Serve is important because it creates relationships between our students, faculty, and staff and our community partners,” Gabriela Marrero, the coordinator of the event, said.

Gabriela is the Community Partnership Service Scholar for SU Serve and is heavily involved in setting up the event. She also said, “The service itself greatly benefits the organizations that we work with.”

Students can serve at over 50 community partners such as Ashburn’s Animals, Kidsgrove, Mostly Mutts, Patchwork Farm, etc. Marrero’s favorite place to volunteer is at Mostly Mutts. “I love it due to the relationship I have created with the owner and how grateful she is to have students help,” said Marrero.
