Susquehanna women’s lacrosse lost to Scranton 16-9 on Senior Day on Saturday, April 21 in Selinsgrove.
Four seniors, Caroline rabiecki, Una Heinzerling, Anna Trapane and Brooke Burnett were honored during the pregame ceremony.
Leading the way for the River Hawks were sophomore attacker Gabi Toohey and junior attacker Brooke Klair, who each had a hat trick on the day. Junior attack Kathrina DeMaio also dished out five assists.
Susquehanna drew first blood as DeMaio called her own number for an unassisted goal just three minutes into the game.
SENIOR DAY — Seniors Caroline Rabiecki, Una Heinzerling, Anna Trapane, and Brooke Burnett get honored before their game against conference-foe Scranton.
Scranton quickly responded with five-unanswered goals, three of which coming on freeposition shots. Elena Gallo and Shannon Warburton both scored two goals in the run.
The River Hawks responded with a goal at the 15-minute from Klair, but Scranton continued to pour it on, making the score 8-2 with seven minutes to go in the first half.
Susquehanna did not go into halftime without a fight. The River Hawks would score three times in the remaining six minutes of the first half to narrow the Royals’ lead to three.
Rabiecki scored two goals with assists from DeMaio and sophomore attacker Stephanie Dowling. Toohey added the third to get the score to 8-5 heading into halftime.
The second half started with promise as Toohey scored just five minutes in off of a DeMaio assist, but the next twenty minutes would be a one-sided affair.
The Royals tacked on sixstraight goals in those twenty minutes to push their lead to 14-6 with just nine minutes remaining in the contest.
Klair was able to tack on two goals at the end, but it wasn’t enough, as the Royals would take home the victory 16-9.
With the loss, Susquehanna fell to 4-7 on the year while Scranton improved to 9-6.
The River Hawks also played another game against Marywood, where they lost 13-8.
DeMaio scored another hat trick on the day and also added an assist on a Klair goal.
Susquehanna started slow on the day, and found themselves down 5-0 less than 10 minutes into the contest.
The River Hawks would come soaring back into the game with three-straight goals.
DeMaio would score the first two on free-position shots, and Dowling would add the third also on a free-position shot.
Marywood would respond though with three-straight goals of their own to go into the half with an 8-3 lead.
Susquehanna would narrow the lead to three thanks to an unassisted goal from Klari and another free-position goal from sophomore midfielder Mel Barracato to make the score 8-5.
Caitlin Watson would add a goal for Marywood with 24:51 remaining in the game, but the River Hawks would continue the run with goals from DeMaio on a free-position shot and Rabiecki on a Klair assist.
Watson would add another goal at the 14:33 mark on an assist from Gina Babcock, but Klair would add her first goal of the game on a DeMaio assist to narrow the lead to two.
Marywood however would close out the game with threestraight goals, two of which in a man-up position, for a 13-8 win.
