Greek Week kicked off on Friday, April 13, which started the week long competition between the fraternities and sororities on campus.
The week was filled with events such as Greek Olympics, Trivia, Amazing Race, a case study and ends with the popular Airband dance competition which takes place Friday, April 20 at 8 p.m. in Weber Chapel.
The overall theme for Greek Week is “Worlds” and each organization had the opportunity to choose an individual “world” as their theme. Themes for the week include Harry Potter, High School Musical, The Wild West, Star Wars, Marvel, Alice in Wonderland, The Lord of the Rings, the Little Mermaid, the FIFA World Cup and the Flintstones.
To start off the week the organizations showed off their artistic abilities with a banner contest. Their banners had to represent their themes and were hung outside of Degenstein Campus Center. Phi Mu Alpha won the fraternity contest and Zeta Tau Alpha won the sorority contest.
Greek Olympics took place on the following day. Each Greek organization took part in games such as tug-of-war, an egg toss, a relay race, a pie eating contest and a donut relay. Phi Mu Delta won the Greek Olympics for the fraternities and Kappa Delta won on the sorority side.
At the conclusion of the week there will be one winner amongst the fraternities and one winner from the sororities.
“Events are worth 100 points, but each event has their own point system. Portions of the 100 points for the event are assigned based on the rank of an individual fraternity and sorority for that event,” said vice president of membership development for the Inter-Fraternity Council, Nicholas Trotter.
On Sunday, Greek members tested their knowledge on Susquehanna facts and popular culture during trivia. The winners for the fraternity and sorority teams were Alpha Phi Omega and Kappa Delta respectively.
The Amazing Race took place on Monday, where teams were given clues to areas around campus to run to and answer trivia. Despite the rainy weather, competitors were still out and ready to compete for their organizations. Phi Mu Delta took home the win for the fraternity teams and Kappa Delta came out on top amongst the sororities.
On Wednesday members of each organization presented a case study to a set of judges. “We got a scenario and we had to define what was wrong in the situation and how it should have been handled and then we were asked questions by the judges,” senior Lauren Perone said.
Each event had different judges that were chosen by the Greek Week Committee. The committee was made up of representatives from each fraternity and sorority and was headed by the Vice President of Programming for the Panhellenic Council Chip Cruz and the Vice President of Membership Development for the InterFraternity Council Nick Trotter.
Judges included staff members from the Office of Leadership and Engagement, Residence Life staff and members of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.
On Friday, April 20, organizations will show off their dancing skills in Airband. Groups are permitted and encouraged to choose a theme for their Airband dance that is different from their Greek Week theme, in order to keep all Airband themes a surprise until the start of each performance.
Airband is open to the community, doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets will cost $3 for all of those not performing.
Greek week ends on Sunday, April 22, at the awards ceremony, where the winners will be revealed and awards will be given to individual chapters.
