With the warm weather approaching, students at Susquehanna are looking to get into shape for summer 2018. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. Many of us are veterans when it comes to going to the gym. Whether it be for lifting weights or just going for a run, we know what we need to do from the moment we step into the fitness center. However, there are some who may be new to the gym, or perhaps have made it their new years resolution to get in shape for 2018. Whatever the reason may be, they find themselves standing in the fitness center wondering “now what?”.
Recently the sports complex has arranged various informational sessions regarding the use of the gym, how to use various machines and exercise equipment, and even tips to jump start your workout routine such as what exercises to do when, and what they do for your body. Staff members are able to give tours, information about the sports complex, as well as the hours of operation to ensure you can get the most out of your workout.
The sports complex has recently been renovated with new weights and equipment in an attempt to appeal to students as Susquehanna takes a step towards the overall modernization of its facilities. This follows the renovation of the field house and their replacement of its old indoor track. With this modernization comes improved staff interaction with students, and an attempt to bring in both regular students as well as those who are new to fitness. The staff of the sports complex hope to make all those who step through its doors feel welcomed. Its is of the upmost importance that students feel that the sports complex and the gym especially is a judgement free area for students to better themselves and improve their quality of life.
Staff are encouraging to students but also enforcing rules and proper gym etiquette. Things to keep in mind when using the gym and sports complex facilities include: being respectful to others, taking care of the gym equipment such as the free weights as well as putting them back in the correct locations when you are finished using them, don’t be excessive when dropping weights; sometimes it is necessary but don’t abuse it, clean machines after use, don’t block mirrors especially if others are using them, don’t horde free weights, and make sure to do your workout in an efficient and timely manner as to let others have the opportunity to use machines.
Though the gym can be an intimidating place at first, it is worthwhile to make it a habit of going at least twice a week. With a well-managed routine, you can expect to see results both physically and mentally after the first week. Results include being more energetic, more motivation to do other tasks and even improvements on your ability to do schoolwork. The problem most people have when first starting at the gym is committing to a routine. Most often quit within the first week, however once you get through the first week it becomes like clockwork.
If you are hesitant about getting started, stop into the sports center and speak to the staff there. They are friendly and willing to help you get started and give you the information you need to excel in whatever you plan may be.
