Thanks to two strong performances from freshman Gabby Bubba, the Susquehanna softball team swept conference-foe Dickson on Saturday, March 30 in Washington, D.C.
Bubba pitched a combined nine and a half scoreless innings of relief between the two games.
Errors were also a big part of the two victories from Susquehanna as Catholic committed three in both games.
Game one started off well for the River Hawks as they jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead by the top of the third inning.
Senior left fielder Leigh Ann Greenwald scored the first run of the game after scoring on an interference call.
Senior third baseman Emily Boman would extend the lead on an RBI single in the top of the third to score senior shortstop Brooke Kohler.
Boman would advance to third on an error on the same play and senior right fielder McKayla Brady would then drive in Boman for the third run.
Catholic’s Megan Colline would bring the lead back to one in the bottom half of the inning off of a two-run home run off of junior pitcher Alexa Gonzalez.
In the bottom the fourth, the Cardinals would tie the game off from a sacrifice fly from Makayla Czan. The game would remain tied until the ninth inning, as Bubba would come into the game and shutdown the Cardinals with five-scoreless innings.
In the top of the ninth, the River Hawks would break the tie thanks to two-unearned runs and Bubba would close out the game for a 5-3 victory for Susquehanna in extra innings.
Game two started out much the same for the River Hawks as the game would enter extra innings once again tied 3-3.
Susquehanna would open the flood gates though in the top of the tenth inning as a home run for Boman and an RBI double from senior second baseman Heather Pearson would help propel the River Hawks to an 8-3 lead.
Bubba would proceed to close the game out in the bottom-half of the inning to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Junior first baseman Jackie Gore went 3-5 with three RBIs in game two for the River Hawks.
With the losses, Catholic dropped to .500 on the year at 10- 10 and now sit at 2-4 in the Landmark Conference.
Susquehanna also took home a two wins against Messiah College on Thursday, April 5 in Selinsgrove.
Boman went a perfect 6-6 on the day with three runs and four RBIs for the River Hawks.
With the two wins on Thursday, Susquehanna will ride a seve-game winning streak into the weekend for a doubleheader on the road against conference foe Moravian. The Greyhounds sit at 15-3 on the season and 4-0 in the conference.
Game time for Susquehanna is at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
