Students in the Greek community showcased their musical talents in Tau Kappa Epsilon’s fundraising event for their philanthropy, on Monday, March 26.
This was the third year that the event was held by the fraternity. Representatives from Greek organizations on campus entered to perform in the singing competition.
All of the money that was raised from ticket sales for the event was donated to TKE’s philanthropy, Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The fraternity has partnered with the hospital since the chapter was re-founded on campus in 2005.
The winners of the competition, junior Seth Schilling and sophomores Milo Brooking and William Meriney are members of Phi Mu Alpha.
Jamming Out— Junior Seth Schilling and sophomores William Meriney and Milo Brooking were the Phi Mu Alpha’s representatives for the Jam for St. Jude’s event held by Tau Kappa Epsilon. The group won first place for their act.
The three students make up the band Broken Star and together they performed two original songs that were written by Schilling.
Schilling plays the guitar, trumpet, primarily, while Brooking plays bass, piano and percussion. Meriney plays the drums and percussion.
The three men said they were excited to win the competition.
“Winning was exhilarating. I’ve played in competitions before, but always jazz competitions, so winning a competition with rock was great,” Brooking said.
Junior Kyle Swisher, TKE’s philanthropy chair, spoke to the preparation of the event.
“When planning the event we reach out to each Greek organization to see who is willing to participate and what equipment they might need for their performances,” Swisher said. “Then we contact professors or close friends that can volunteer as judges for the event.”
Swisher said they also advertised in the lower level of Degenstein and through social media.
Swisher said that the Greek life has a lot of members attend the event to support their brothers and sisters.
The event raised over $800 for Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“We were able to raise more money than we ever had before for St. Jude,” said Swisher. “Hopefully we can continue getting so many Greek organizations involved in each other’s events to bring the community together for a good cause.”
