Saint Patrick’s Day came to campus early with the Get Lucky party at Trax on Saturday, March 3. Students broke out their best green attire for the party hosted by SAC, Student Activities Committee.
The SAC added different elements to the night to make it more than the average Saturday night at Trax. They had door prizes, a giveaway and the announcement of the performer for the spring concert.
“We decided to announce the concert at the Get Lucky party for several reasons. First, we thought it would be a great way to announce the concert directly to the students instead of only announcing it on our social media accounts. Second, we thought it would help facilitate more attendance at the Get Lucky party,” said the vice president of finance for SAC, Jessica Pavey.
SAC announced that they will be hosting B.o.B for the spring concert on Saturday, March 24th, in Weber Chapel. The concert will be free for students to attend.
John Bucci, an event planner for SAC, said, “Get Lucky was an amazing night! With multiple DJs, raffles with great prizes and many dancing leprechauns, SAC was happy with the turnout.”
Bucci also commented that the large turnout and enthusiastic faces made him confident that the event was successful.
“As a member of SAC and a student here at SU, I love getting to communicate with my fellow classmates and make their college experience one to remember.” said Bucci.
One of the prizes that was given away was a Nintendo Switch with two games, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released in April of last year and featured a host of new playable characters such as Inkling Girl and Boy from Splatoon, King Boo, Dry Bones and Bowser Jr.
Super Mario Odyssey was released in October of last year. The game’s plot focuses on Bowser kidnapping ploy, a evil wedding plan and Mario’s Odyssey Airship rescue.
The first 150 students who arrived at the party received a ticket for the drawing.
They also had a board game raffle basket which every student who attended the Get Lucky party could enter to win.
Senior Gabriela Marrero was the winner of the board game raffle basket.
“I really wasn’t expecting to win one of the raffle baskets,” Marrero said. “I was shocked and excited. A lot of the games are so fun to play with a bunch of friends.”
To incorporate the Saint Patrick’s Day theme into the party, Trax was decorated with shamrocks, a rainbow of string lights that led into a pot of gold, green streamers and green balloons.
They also handed out green beads and glow in the dark green shutter shades to students who attended. SAC also provided Shamrock Shakes for students to enjoy during the night.
This was the 5th year in a row that SAC has hosted the Get Lucky party.
“SAC has been hosting the Get Lucky party since 2014. Before that, Women’s Speak hosted a Saint Patrick’s Day party in Trax in 2012 and Trax hosted the event in 2013,” Pavey said.
SAC began planning the event over winter break. The event director this year was Evan Anderson, who worked with the staff at Trax to put on the event. Together they planned out the decorations, food and entertainment.
Anderson said that their were a lot of details and layouts to finalize in a small period of time.
“It was difficult at first to get DJs that were qualified or even to apply, until we found Joplin and Jason,” said Anderson.
There were two student DJs at the event, juniors Jason Bonner and Joplin Wallace.
“The DJ did a great job and it was a fun atmosphere,” Marrero said after the event.
