Susquehanna’s women’s basketball kept their on-going winning streak with a 59-55 win against Drew University on Saturday, Feb. 10 but had it snapped just four days later with a 64-47 loss against Scranton on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
The Landmark Conference game against Drew was the River Hawks third-straight win to make them tied for fourth place in the conference standings as of Saturday.
The loss against Scranton however, dropped the River Hawks to a tie for fifth place. However due to a tiebreaker, the woman’s team was eliminated from tournament contention as the last game of the regular season approaches.
In the first quarter against Drew, Susquehanna started out strong and jumped out to a score of 15-7 about halfway through the first quarter.
Junior point guard Bailey Trell made her first three 3-pointers which helped the River Hawks jump out to a 41-29 lead. Trell’s shots were part of a notable first half from Susquehanna, in which they went 9-14 from the 3-point line.
Drew fought back in the second half however and brought the game back to only a onepoint deficit: 56-55 with a little over two minutes left in the game. Susquehanna’s defense stayed strong and held their lead to get the win.
Senior center Courtney Adams with 14 points and five out
of the team’s 11 blocks on the day. Freshman guard Erin McQuillen was right behind her with 13 points and also added four assists and eight rebounds.
Trell also contributed 12 points to the River Hawk win, senior guard Tess Nichols scored 10 and junior power forward Maddie Murray tied also had eight rebounds on the day.
In Wednesday’s game against Scranton, Adams and McQuillen were both able to score double figures in a 64-47 loss.
Adams also led the team with points with 17 and McQuillen followed with 12.
The game started off with an 8-2 run for the River Hawks with six points coming from Adams. Susquehanna kept the lead throughout the first quarter at 13-11, and eventually extended it to 25-16 at the half. The River Hawks’ defense was lockdown in the second quarter and limited the Royals to only one field goal in the quarter.
Scranton began to take control in the second half though as they jumped out to a 48-32 lead.
The Royals would enter the fourth quarter with a 16-point lead and kept their lead by a double-digit margin for the rest of the game.
With the loss, Susquehanna dropped to 11-12 and 6-7 in Landmark Conference play. The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 for a home game against Elizabethtown at 4 p.m. Saturday is also Senior Night for Susquehanna where Adams, Nichols, Holly Crossin, Desiree Furbert and Megan McFadden will all be honored before the game.
