The Susquehanna women’s soccer team won 1-0 in double overtime in Landmark Conference action to close out the regular season against Moravian College. Susquehanna ended the season 14-3-1 overall, and 6-1 in the Landmark Conference.
Before the game started 11 senior River hawks were recognized. Goalkeepers Jenifer Thorsheim, and Julia Tolin; defensemen Cassandra Coombs, Brynn Hainey, Marissa Heddings; midfielders Mairead Ruane, Chloe Eisenhuth, and Grayclynn Juckes; forwards Bianca DiTrolio, Alyssa Bolger, and Geena Ragozine were all recognized on senior day at Sassafrass Field in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
Julia Tolin, a senior goalkeeper, started in the net and ended the game with a total of two saves. The scoreboard was not able to light up by either teams, Moravian had a total of three shots Susquehanna ended the first period with three shots and a corner kick by junior defensemen Emily Leftkowitz.
The second half ended with no scoring but three shots on goal by Moravian and eight shots on goal for Susquehanna, two of them being headers by seniors Alyssa Bolger and Grayclynn Juckes.
Moravian totaled in two corner kicks while Susquehanna only had one. Jennifer Thorsheim, a senior goalie for Susquehanna, started the second half at goalie.
Second half over, 0-0 meaning overtime.
During the overtime period a shot on goal was made by Susquehanna and two shots on goal by Moravian but still no scoring plays to light up the board. There had to be a double overtime period.
In the second overtime period Moravian wasn’t able to keep up with the high-powered Susquehanna offense, and they finally gave up the game winner.
Junior forward Emily Sullivan in only two minutes in the second overtime scored the game-winning goal. Juckes passed the ball over to Sullivan who was in the center of the box giving her a clear shot to the back of the net. She was able to head it in for the win. Thorsheim had a total of three saves on the day.
Sullivan led all players on the day with five total shots and scored her sixth goal of the season with the overtime winner. Jukes had the assist on the goal.
Moravian had more shots on goal on the day with five compared to Susquehanna’s three but the River Hawks led in overall shots with 13 compared to the Greyhound’s five. Moravian also had four more fouls on the day than Susquehanna.
The River Hawks will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 4 when they play for the Landmark Conference title on the road against Scranton.
Scranton is coming off a 3-0 win in the conference semi- finals against Elizabethtown, and currently sit with a 13-3-2 record on the season. They are also undefeated in conference play on the year with a 7-0 record.
The Royals also beat Susquehanna during their only meeting this year 3-0.
