Susquehanna’s authorative body that governs the fraternities on campus hosted a brand new celebrative event for the new members from the newly introduced semi-formal recruitment week.

The new event, using a motive of unity, had members of the fraternities mingle and chat with all of the other members of the fraternities and other individuals attending.

The Inter Fraternity Council, IFC, acceptance ceremony was held on Wed. Feb. 14, at 5:30 p.m. to commemorate the new members being introduced to the Greek Life on campus.

First-year Nick Pufko, a new member of Phi Mu Delta said, “Welcoming new members to some of the greatest organizations out there benefits everybody, they bring everybody together.”

The event was open to everyone including non-Greek members, faculty, staff and administration so that all could commemorate the newly created IFC recruitment event.

The new and current members mingled in the crowded room while a slideshow presented photos from events throughout the week.

The President of the IFC, junior Dom Gambino said, “It shows a sense of community… it promotes not just Greek life, but Susquehanna life as well. This event shows us what we are capable of.”

All the Susquehanna Fraternities were represented during the event: Tau Kappa Epsilon, Pi Kappa Phi, Theta Chi, Phi Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Delta, and Phi Mu Alpha.

The attendees enjoyed entrees throughout the evening including pigs in a blanket and egg rolls. For a new event to the IFC calendar, it was so well attended that the food had to be constantly refilled.

At 5:50 p.m., a ceremonial opening speech was given by Bryan Rivas, the Greek life advisor, and several members of the IFC executive board.

Rivas used his speech to emphasize the historical meaning of fraternities and how proud he is of this most recent induction process.

The former president of the IFC, senior Michael Sharer, thanked everyone for attending the event and told the audience how honored and privileged he was to have served as last year’s IFC president.

Sharer also acknowledged and expressed his gratitude to those who were on the 2017-2018 IFC board and explained how all the new inductees are new young men willing to adapt to succeed.

Gambino introduced the 2018-2019 IFC board expressed the significance about how they all had great potential as new members of their organizations. The ceremony and the event concluded with a toast to all new members and the reciting of the IFC creed.

First year Ian Jarmel, after listening to the creed, said, “It made me feel welcome. Like I wasn’t just a student at SU but a member of a family.”
